The boardwalks of Lagos
Peace, nature and endless ocean views along one of the Algarve’s most iconic coastlines.
The boardwalks of Lagos offer one of the most unique and serene ways to experience the Algarve. These wooden pathways wind along cliffs, dunes and protected nature reserves, allowing you to explore the coastline without disturbing the landscape. It’s a calm, safe and accessible way to enjoy the fresh sea breeze, dramatic rock formations and the panoramic views that make Lagos so special.
Along the way, you’ll find several viewpoints overlooking the golden cliffs of Ponta da Piedade and the deep‑blue Atlantic Ocean. Early mornings and sunsets are particularly magical, when the light turns the cliffs warm gold. The boardwalks are easy to navigate, dog‑friendly and suitable for both short strolls and longer coastal walks.
Walking from the Boardwalks: Routes & Distances
The boardwalks connect naturally to several coastal walking routes. Whether you prefer a short, relaxed walk or a longer hike to the next village, the paths are well‑maintained, mostly flat and ideal for all levels.
Ponta da Piedade Boardwalk
Approx. 2.5 km (round trip)
The most accessible route: a gentle walk along the iconic cliffs with multiple viewpoints and information panels about local geology, flora and fauna.
From Ponta da Piedade to Porto de Mós
Approx. 4 km (one way)
From the boardwalks, you can continue along cliff paths towards Porto de Mós. This peaceful route offers wide ocean views and plenty of scenic stops.
From Lagos to Praia da Luz
Approx. 6 km (one way)
For those who want to go further, the walk to Praia da Luz combines boardwalks with natural coastal trails. Expect sweeping ocean views and rugged cliff landscapes.
From Lagos to Alvor (via boardwalks, beach paths and nature reserve)
Approx. 12–14 km (one way)
The route is a mix of boardwalks, quiet coastal paths and stretches of beach. The final section leads through the protected Ria de Alvor nature reserve, where an extensive network of wooden walkways winds through dunes and lagoons. It’s one of the most tranquil and beautiful walking areas in the Algarve.
Although the route isn’t a single continuous boardwalk, it remains largely car‑free and nature‑friendly, ideal for anyone seeking a longer, peaceful coastal hike.
